Movietech return with support on Season Two of His Dark Materials

His Dark Materials

Movietech support the crew on His Dark Materials with full frame package.

Having supported the crew during filming on the first series, Movietech are proud to have returned for the eight-episode season two of His Dark Materials. Starring Ruth Wilson, Dafne Keen and James McAvoy, the acclaimed fantasy television series based on the novels by Philip Pullman is produced by Bad Wolf for BBC One and HBO.

Shot back-to-back with the season one, season two is filmed on location and at the newly created Bad Wolf Studios, Cardiff. Working with Directors of Photography David Higgs BSC ‘Dust Unit’ and Joel Devlin ‘Shadow Unit’ (main and 2nd respectively) Movietech were able to provide enhanced levels of local support via their Cardiff based operation, Movietech Cymru.

In supporting the production, the company supplied a comprehensive camera package featuring equipment from their range of large format digital systems. Having provided an Alexa LF based package to the crew on series one, for the second season a Sony Venice recording native 6K, with Venice Rialto tethered system was used to capture the story. Equipped with its impressive 36 x 24mm, full frame image sensor, the versatility of the system proved advantageous during the post production process. The ability to detach the camera’s body and image sensor for use in a ‘snorkel’ mode allowing for re-racking and reframing of images, a particularly useful feature when creating VFX heavy scenes.

The camera body was paired with a set of large format Supreme Prime lenses from Zeiss. Lighter and more compact than comparable lenses, the Supremes are built for use with 6K and 8K sensors and offer incredible levels of control over stunning, consistent flares, perfect for delivering the show’s wonderfully cinematic look.

Speaking about providing support on the production, Movietech’s David Palmer says “We’re delighted to have once again worked with the team at His Dark Materials. We provided a Venice based full frame system which the crew has used to deliver fantastic results. It was also great for us to be able to directly provide local support via our team at Movietech Cymru.”
